A first of its kind study on foot function
In a groundbreaking collaboration between ourselves and Wyde Footwear, a significant study explored the correlation between footwear and foot health. Conducted in November 2023 in Sri Lanka, the study aimed to clarify the role of footwear in foot health, showing definitively that footwear plays a significant role in foot health over time.
The study revealed insights into Hallux Valgus Angles (HVA), measuring the degree of misalignment in the big toe. Comparisons showed significant differences in HVA values between barefoot individuals and those habitually wearing shoes or closed-toe sandals, highlighting the profound impact of footwear choices on foot shape and health.
Analysis of HVA values among various occupational groups revealed disparities. For instance, upper-class school teachers and police officers, obligated to wear formal shoes, displayed higher HVA values compared to barefoot or flip-flop-wearing individuals. These findings emphasize the nuanced relationship between profession, footwear choices, and foot health.
